Periodontal Treatment: From Deep Cleanings to Tissue Grafts

Nov 7 • 2 minute read

Healthy gums are important to the longevity and strength of your teeth. But when gum disease takes hold, soft tissue pulls away, leaving your smile exposed to damage and decay. To reverse mild to moderate gum disease, it is important to seek treatment for plaque and tartar removal. If advanced cleanings cannot correct dental issues caused by infection, tissue grafting may be necessary.

As a periodontal specialist, Dr. Guier and his team offer dental care to treats gums and preserve your natural smile. We provide a conservative approach to patients with mild to moderate symptoms but can also offer surgical intervention for patients in need.

Deep Cleanings to Prevent Advanced Infection

After numbing the treatment area with a local anesthetic, Dr. Guier removes calcified tartar and plaque from around teeth and root structures. This procedure is minimally invasive and does not involve an extended healing period.  In conjunction with regular home care habits, deep cleanings help restore your overall dental health. This prepares your smile for other treatments that may be necessary to correct dental issues.

Surgical Options: Tissue Grafts and Contouring

Periodontal disease and aggressive brushing can negatively impact gums, causing tissue recession and exposed roots. This can only be treated with a graft since gum tissue will not regenerate on its own. A gum graft is the best way to cover teeth that appear too long or have been exposed due to advanced gum disease. In this treatment, Dr. Guier removes damaged soft tissue where necessary and provides biocompatible replacements. This is an efficient and easy way to achieve a full, confident smile that also promotes the health and longevity of teeth.

Extraction and Replacement of Failing Teeth

If gum disease has advanced to the point where pocket reduction and grafts will not reverse symptoms of advanced infection, extraction, and replacement with implants may be necessary.   Tooth replacement is the most reliable way to restore your smile after a complex infection has compromised dental structures.
